Chen Chun-Hao was born in Taiwan and graduated from the Fine Art Department of the National Institute of the Arts in 1996, holding his solo exhibition, Aura Beyond, at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum in 2002. In 2003, on behalf of the Taipei Artists’ Village, Chen participated in the AAC’s Annual Conference in San Francisco, California, and has since held many well-received solo exhibitions at Tina Keng Gallery and VT Artsalon. In 1997, while teaching, Chen randomly began using thumbtacks as a medium for creation. Since then, this unusual style of experimentation has made him stand out in the art scene.
In Dogs in Thumbtacks (2008), Chen uses thumbtacks - everyday stationery that has become popular due to mass production, and piles them side-by-side to form lines and planes, making the best use of the metallic reflections of the bulky mass, which transforms when viewing the work from different angles. These uniquely shaped “thorny dogs”, with their heads, tails, and limbs made of different materials, do not only enrich the texture and the aesthetic value of the work, but also emphasize the artistic potential of the thumbtacks themselves. With a neutral attitude towards materials and his creative forces, Chen manages to endow them with powerful emotions, and the densely packed array of tacks is reminiscent of high-profile defensive weaponry which serve as a contemporary language for interpreting the profoundness of traditional aesthetics.
