Born in 1968 in Inner Mongolia,Wei Dong was graduated from the Department of Fine Arts at the Beijing Normal University in 1991.His earliest works were made public in 1991 at the Huadu Hotel Gallery in Beijing.Since then,he has showed his talent in important Chinese art institutions such as the National Art Museum of China, the Contemporary Art Museum,as well as other international exhibitions in Sweden,Spain,Britain and so on,gaining him attention from the art community at home and overseas. After 1997,Wei Dong has participated in exhibitions organized by Arvada Art Center in Colorado,USA,Rudolph’s Art Museum in Prague, and Espace Cardin Art Center in Paris. He has also successfully held his solo exhibition "Adventures of the Ugly" at Today Art Museum in Beijing in 2015.His artwork features the "subversion" and "merging",taking his own place in Chinese oil painting with the strong visual perception he delivers and the art language that integrates Chinese and Western style. His works have been collected by institutions such as San Francisco Modern Art Museum,Fukuoka Art Museum, and the Portuguese Oriental Fund.
The two pieces " Language of the War No.1" and " Language of the War No.2" were both created in 2003.They are important representatives of Wei Dong’s early works. The nude women in military uniform almost occupy the whole picture with expanded body scale. The characterization of vivid expressions and the twisted and varying postures demonstrate the artist's strong skills in literal depiction and artistic expression.Wei Dong deliberately cut out some feminine feature of the characters, and fosters an unutterable visual confrontation via coy gestures and vague eyes-expressions,carrying some sense of implication as in Balthus’s paintings. The traditional green landscape in the lower part of the picture and the huge figure of the characters form strong collision in visual perception and cultural conception, showing the hustle and anxiousness of the early political art.The disorderly symbols repeatedly looming out of the picture are like the "language of the war".This not only further enhances the complexity of interpreting the works, but is also expanding the "territory" of the artistic imagination with the "separation" and "subversion" of the image and its connotation.
