Yang Shaobin was born in 1963 in Hebei. He enrolled in the Hebei Science and Engineering University Light Industrial College, where he studied ceramic design in the Art Department. In 1991,he taught himself oil painting, which led to his determination to become an artist. He moved to the Yuanmingyuan Artist Village on the outskirts of Beijing, later participating in the “cynical realism” movement launched by Fang Lijun and Liu Wei.His robust and direct creative vocabulary allowed him to win the attention of art circles, and in 2000 he was awarded the Artist Award from Chinese Contemporary Art Awards(CCAA),an independent,non-profit entity established by Swiss collector Uli Sigg.Starting in 2004,Yang held successive solo exhibitions at the Beijing Art Now Gallery, the Long March Space, the National Gallery of Indonesia in Jakarta, the Museu de Arte de São Paulo in Brazil, and the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art in Beijing. In addition to this,he participated in the 1999 Venice Biennale and the 2009 Thirty Years of China Contemporary Art(1979-2009)exhibition at the Minsheng Art Museum in Shanghai. His works have been collected by various art museums and private collections, including the Fondation Cartier pour l’Art Contemporain in France, the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in the United States, the China Club in Hong Kong, and the Zurich Insurance Company.
In 1994,Yang Shaobin started creating violence-themed art to express his concern for the violence in society, saying,“History is written through violence, and social change is inseparable from violence and the use of force. This is the best tool for balancing the world;ideological struggle is like soft violence, strong enough to alter the course of a country’ s history.” Yang attempted to draw the viewer’s attention to the crux of the problem through art that expresses the mental state of the people. His Police series completed in 1996 is created under the context of red violence. He portrays police officers as symbols of the executers of public power, however he depicts them in a distorted manner, with an air of arrogance on their face. The high level of tension of his art can be regarded as the artist’s allegory of the reality of society.
