Chen Fei was born in Shanxi Province in 1983.In 2005,he graduated from the Fine Arts School of Beijing Film Academy. From then on,he started to making art works independently and became a major representative among the emerging artists of the 1980’s generation. While studying at BFA,Chen Fei demonstrated extraordinary art perceptions and held the “Chen Fei’s Oil Painting Solo Exhibition”.In 2010,his solo exhibition “Bad Taste” was directed and hosted by Schoeni Art Gallery, and was later toured in other cities including Shanghai,Taipei,Suzhou,Chengdu, etc. In 2014,his solo exhibition “Flesh and Me” held at Perrotin Gallery in Hong Kong was highly praised in the art circle. His works were collected by Frank-Suss in London,ME Museum in Berlin.
Chen Fei especially likes to collect creepy puppets and all sorts of peripheral products from old eccentric films, plus a broad range of hobbies developed since childhood,he usually draws inspirations from them when creating sculptures. After 2000,he continuously practiced art experiments using skeletons as the media and created “Because God Loves Me Series” that includes 3 pieces of sculptures from 2008-2009.Chen Fei created contradictions and integrations between plastic cement and acrylics paint to produce delicate media reactions from completely different materials, and to convey absolutely different visual effects through the contradictions between the shape of the skeleton and the outer colors of pink, black and mixed colors.Different from “For the Love of God” by the British artist Damien Hirst,Chen Fei deliberately makes the sculptures simple and easy to understand despite the complicated appearance. The smooth surface, the raised dots and the accumulation of outer colors are Chen Fei’s clever techniques in producing the contradictions between materials and their symbolic meanings. From the extremely contradictory and shocking artistic atmosphere, between familiar and strangeness, the audience could appreciate the formal aesthetics with ultimate meanings.
