Chen Wenbo was born is Chong Qing.In 1991,he graduated from the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute. In the early years, his works were displayed at “Guangzhou Oil Painting Biennial” in 1992,and “Chinese Oil Painting Biennial” in 1993.In 2000,his first solo exhibition held in Loft Gallery in Paris attracted attentions from the international art circle.Later,He successively held numerous solo exhibitions at He Xiang Ning Art Museum in Guangzhou,Grace Alexander Gallery in Zurich,Ullens Centre for Contemporary Art in Beijing,Shanghai Gallery of Art,and a recently solo exhibition for his new works at Klein Sun Gallery in New York.He plays an important role in the Modern Realism Movement as he applies photography techniques into his painting style. His works were once collected by Ullens Foundation,Olenska Foundation,Uli Sigg,He Xiang Ning Art Museum,Guangdong Museum of Art and other institutions.
The work Someday NO.2 is one of Chen Wenbo’s most important works in the early creation and was once exhibited in Chinart’s tour exhibition of contemporary Chinese art in many different places in Europe. This painting pictures the modern urban scenery through combining the design of a calendar and natural sceneries. It sets a foundation for his later creations that are based on the theme of symbolic sceneries and objects in the urban life and the composition of a combination of the two-dimensional photography and the advertisement design. The painter himself only plays the role of a “photo maker” who doesn’t give emotional directions to the audience. He modifies and incorporates urban sceneries into the creation of a unique “urban poetry” and enables the audience to seek for their own understandings. The painting selects a single color of pink as the background color, displays the misty and floating clouds in the sky,and creates an ambiguous and illusory atmosphere, all of which are identical to the features of a city. These elements somehow represent the people living in the city, and the imagination of shuttling between reality and dream.
