Pair of Jumu armchairs with four protruding ends(Qing dynasty)

114.5cm×68cm×68cm (45 1/8×26 3/4×26 3/4 in)

The vigorously shaped top rail carved with a headrest above the S-shaped back splat with attractive wood grain, the round stiles tennoned into the top rail, like the front round posts, passing through the seat and becoming the rounded-square-section legs, the widely curved arm rails terminating in out swept hooks above shaped spandrels, supported on curved struts and extending beyond the front posts, the soft mat seat set within the wide rectangular frame, above shaped aprons and spandrels with beaded edge on the front and sides, all supported on legs of rounded-square section joined by stepped stretchers and the footrest above a plain, shaped apron.
Of slender members and elegant proportions, the completely plain chairs are fine examples of the art of Ming furniture. Made of choice jumu (Southern Elm), they are quite unusual as most surviving Ming furniture was made of the huanghuali wood. Jumu is a popular furniture material in the south-east area of China in the Ming and Qing dynasties as it is also strong and durable.
