Tourbillon, one of the escapement designs, was invented by the famous French / Swiss watch master Abraham Louis Breguet in 1795 and patented in 1801. This design can offset the impact of operation power by the balance wheel and hairspring (including the Earth’s gravity and imbalance of the balance wheel and hairspring). Thus making the time piece more accurate.
The design is to place the escapement in a rotatable frame, and when the escapement is rotated 180 degrees, the influence of the gravitational pull will be offset. The effect of gravity has a greater impact on pocket watches. This is because pocket watches are often left in the same position for a longer time. Different tourbillon designs have different rotational speeds, but are generally completed one round in every minute.
Tourbillon is one of the most valuable designs and challenging craftsmanship in the watch making industry. Although the tourbillon does not play a practical role on today’s watch accuracy, yet it is still the most sought after complicated design by collectors in high-priced watches. The first production of tourbillon mechanism was made by Breguet for the French Napoleon in one of his carriage clocks.
Anthony Randall, British watch maker, invented a double-axis tourbillon in 1977, and then obtained a patent. Richard Good, British watch maker, made the first double-axis tourbillon in 1978.
