See the eyes bright as snow, hear the wind singing gently.
Born in Hebei in 1947, Ai Xuan, the eldest son of the renowned Chinese poet Ai Qing, has determined to pursue painting as his lifelong career since childhood. In 1984, he went to study at Beijing Fine Arts Academy, and later in 1987 to Oklahoma City University as an academic visitor, where he met the leading figure of American Realism, Andrew Wyeth and was largely inspired by his distinct art style. Ai has participated in the first Chinese Oil Painting Exhibition and had his first solo exhibition in Hefner Galleries. His work has entered the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the National Art Museum of China in Beijing and the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, Japan.
In the past few decades, Tibet has always been the theme of Ai Xuan's paintings. He has also revisited Tibet many times. The work, Girl in the Wind, presented in the auction, is a masterpiece and a comprehensive presentation of many iconic characteristics of the artist. Ai Xuan once noted that the depiction of eyes is the part he manages with great care, through which a natural connection between the work and the spectator can be established. Besides, the color in his work is also of his iconic style. The use of blue, in particular, generates an intense artistic effect. At first glance, the figure in the foreground is brown, and the snow in the distance is snowy white. While at a closer look, there's always a blue hue infused with the paint regardless of the range of view, infiltrating an aloof atmosphere into the picture. In the meantime, the artist deliberately emphasized the red color on the girl's face, forming a delightful contrast with the light blue tone, and indicating the positive aspirations concealed inside.
