Holding flowers for an encounter
Though the views of the mountain and water change in accordance with time and place, the landscapes depicted by Pang Jiun always appear tranquil and open, as in Xie Lingyun's poetry, “the wilderness is open, the sandy shore is clear, in the sky high above hangs the bright autumn moon.” If we compare his landscape painting to a lyrical poem, then his still life painting of flowers is like a dance accompanied by music, in which the long sleeves flutter with grace and ease. Thus Pang Jun once said: “My paintings of flower are more free and colorful. I'm not painting the flower, but presenting a spiritual visual language with the color, the pen, my personality, and my emotions, which is both Eastern and Western.”
Different from the Western idea to view the flower as the depicted object, Pang attaches particular importance to the spiritual expression of Chinese literati when they draw on flowers and trees. Known for its graceful posture and as the Cloud Fairy, lily flower symbolizes holiness and elegance, which is the case with Pang Jiun's Lilies. In the picture, the two vases juxtaposed on the plaid carpet in goose yellow and dark blue vary in height and shape, and the lilies of different colors placed in the vases are scattered high and low. Stretching in a limited space, the lilies in full blossom present a vigorous vitality, just as two dancers on the stage, following the graceful dance steps, and waiting for the people who are destined to come with flowers in hand.
