Soft strength
Huang Benrui's bunny: Nini
After graduating in Oil Painting from the National Taiwan Normal University, Huang Benrui went to New York's School of Visual Arts for further study, which she completed in 1992. Since 2012, she has applied her long-standing life and painting experience to the creation of the Bunny Nini series, but in 2013, she began to transform the rabbit's image into something more three-dimensional due to the influence of her husband, a sculptor. She had solo exhibitions at the Eslite Gallery in Taipei and the 456 Gallery in New York and has received a lot of attention. The object of this auction, the sculpture itself named Nini, was created in 2015 and is a representative work of the artist.
As, according to the Chinese Zodiac, Huang Benrui's mother was born in the year of the rabbit and her surname is Ni, Huang named her protagonist Nini, through which she tried to show the feelings of tenderness and safety her mother had given her. In this unfussy sculpture, Bunny Nini seems like a naïve child, quietly welcoming everything that will happen. Its smooth texture and round body are full of gentleness, encouraging viewers to approach it and confide the secrets of their hearts to her. The twinkling eyes seem to be able to read the innermost thoughts of all who gaze upon them, and perhaps confessing to Nini can be a true spiritual healing.
