A Storyteller's Enchantment
Zhang Xiaogang 's Rare Lithograph Print Book
At the end of the 20th century, Zhang Xiaogang's Bloodline: Big Family series was widely acclaimed in the art community during the Venice and São Paulo Art Biennials. He used self-narrative artistic language to shape protagonists who possessed characteristic traits of that era, making his works a microcosm of Chinese culture.
The prints titled Zhang Xiaogang: The Storyteller's Enchantment are a highly unique collection from the series. This collection of prints/poems was planned by Zhang Xiaogang himself and Ante Glibota, a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts. It not only presents 20 lithographs by Zhang Xiaogang, but each piece is also accompanied by a poem written by Spanish poet and writer Fernando Arrabal. All text was printed using the screen print technique, and each piece carries the stamps and signatures of either the author or the artist. This compilation comes with a beautiful aluminum case, 1.2 meters tall, engraved with two bas-reliefs by Zhang, making its artistic and collective value all the higher.
Each of the prints is a very representative piece of the whole series. The composition of the pictures resembles old Chinese photos, with the artist having added a neutral beauty to the protagonists. The featured people, their clothes, and their rigid expressions show the influence of Chinese collectivist thinking. Unlike single paintings featured in the Bloodline: Big Family series, this collection of prints is reminiscent of traditional Chinese photo albums, showing distinctive features of the times.
