Mughal Dynasty - Emerald Carving
In the history of Indian jewelry, the most glorious era was during the Mughal Empire (1526–1857). The carving techniques utilized in the gemstones was inherited from this period and is their most glorified achievement in the history of Indian jewelry. The Mughal dynasty’s monarchs valued the symbolic meaning of jewelry which symbolizing the importance of religion, metaphysics and social status.
The monarchs engraved their names and venerations on jewels as a symbol of wealth and dignity. They believed exquisite jewelry can fend off demons as amulets and evoke the greatest strength to worship the Hindu gods. Due to limited resources of rough materials, the complexity of the craftsmanship is represented through the precisions in the carving.
The artisans’meticulous skills were passed down through generations and over time was favored by major jewelry brands and lapidaries. Cartier purchased vast amounts of Indian ancestral jewelry since the 20th century and adopted their techniques. They were celebrated amongst the western culture, particularly in Art Deco designs, marking the birth of the“Tutti Frutti”collection which received great appreciation by collectors.
This season, we are pleased to present a pair of approximately 63.15 carat emerald, 20.70 carat sapphire and diamond pendent earrings. The earrings carry the various forms of floral motifs derived from 17th century architecture. They are set with a carved, classic hexagonal-shaped emerald in foliage motifs and accented by carved melon-shaped sapphires. This pair of pendent earrings is truly a classic exemplar of classic Indian jewelry, reminiscent of the exquisite craftsmanship of ancient India.
