Padparadscha
Padparadscha is an extremely rare variety of sapphire. Derived from the Sinhalese word for lotus colour‘padma raga’, padparadscha is the symbol of peace and pure. To be named a Padparadscha, the gem should exhibit both pink and orange colours. Its soft pinkish orange hues of sunset is truly an embodiment of rarity and elegance.
It was first found in Sri Lanka hundreds years ago. Although similar coloured sapphires have been found recently in Vietnam, Tanzania and Madagascar, some experts insist that true padparadschas can come only from Sri Lanka.
The elusive and enigmatic pinkish-orange hues is highly prized by gemstone connoisseurs. On January 2018, Princess Eugenie, the daughter of the Duke (Prince Andrew) and Duchess (Sarah Ferguson) of York, announced her engagement with a dazzling padparadscha ring.
