The history of jade stones in Chinese culture dates back to more than 4,000 years ago and jadeite is one of the most significant embodiments of the culture in ancient Eastern civilizations.
The special and unique qualities of jadeite have been highly regarded among the Chinese who respect and adore jade per se. The perilous mining condition on steep slopes, political turmoil in the country, increasingly stringent environmental protection measures and the depletion of the mines all result in the dwindling production of jadeite.
The quality of natural jadeite boulders can vary greatly, and, therefore, jadeite combining the most desirable attributes in colour, transparency and texture is hard to come by. Its polycrystallinetexture renders it fragile and easily fractured. In general, to fashion a strand of matching jadeite beads, all the beads must be carved from the same boulder, involving immense wastage in the process. However, such exceptional jadeite boulders are extremely scarce and relatively small in size, jadeite beads that could be cut and polished from a single rough therefore seldom exceed 5mm to 10mm in diameter.
