Grandeur of Nature

Magnificent and Rare Jadeite bead Necklace
The history of jade stones in Chinese culture dates back to more than 4,000 years ago and jadeite is one of the most significant embodiments of the culture in ancient Eastern civilizations.
The special and unique qualities of jadeite have been highly regarded among the Chinese who respect and adore jade per se. Jade is a symbol of goodness and virtue, representing moral ideals and the optimal spiritual maturity. The ancient Chinese Imperial court and nobility considered jade to be an“Imperial Gem”. The paintings exhibited in the Palace Museum in Beijing depict how the Qing court adored and applied jade in their daily lives – Empress Dowager Cixi in particular. A collectible that helps cultivate one’s temperament, jadeite represents virtue, auspiciousness, prosperity, longevity and authority. Just as the Chinese saying goes: “A humble gentlemen is as gentle as jade”.
It is anticipated that top-quality jade supply will inevitably become even more scarce in the future. After the 1990s, Myanmar government has exerted control over jade mining and introduced stringent trading regulations to deter individuals from entering the jade mines for private transactions. Spring and summer are rainy seasons in the country when severe flooding limits mining activities to the three months over autumn and winter. Mine owners naturally wish to maximise profit from this narrow window of time. With the introduction of modern mining technology, the accompanying overexploitation leads to mine depletion and the subsequent reduction in the supply of jadeite. The Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation from Harvard University published a report in 2016, the result of which shows that only 0.005% of the jadeite mined is of“Imperial jade”quality. The perilous mining condition on steep slopes, political turmoil in the country, increasingly stringent environmental protection measures and the depletion of the mines all result in the dwindling production of jadeite.
The quality of natural jadeite boulders can vary greatly, and, therefore, jadeite combining the most desirable attributes in colour, transparency and texture is hard to come by. Its polycrystallinetexture renders it fragile and easily fractured. In general, to fashion a strand of matching jadeite beads, all the beads must be carved from the same boulder, involving immense wastage in the process. However, such exceptional jadeite boulders are extremely scarce and relatively small in size, jadeite beads that could be cut and polished from a single rough therefore seldom exceed 5mm to 10mm in diameter. This makes jadeite incredibly coveted by collectors, not to mention a perfect, almost invaluable strand of jadeite necklace.
This season, China Guardian (Hong Kong) will offer a magnificent Jadeite and Ruby Diamond Necklace, featuring Imperial-quality jadeite beads of approximately 14 mm in diameter. Its even, succulent emerald green, extremely fine texture and high translucency make it exceptionally lively and spirited when lit by warm sunlight. Symbolising harmony and perfection, this vibrant and elegant necklace delivers the basic concept of balance –“Round Sky Square Earth”(Tian Yuan Di Fang), in Chinese tradition. Regarded as a spiritual gemstone like no other, jadeite worn close to one’s skin would transfer energy to the wearer and a healthy influence would be exerted, while the jadeite itself, attaining positive aura from the wearer, improves in colour and translucency and looks even more elegant and demure.
Top-quality jadeite necklace in Imperial green is highly sought after and commands high prices at auction. The alluring imperial green jadeite delights with the timeless elegance and subtle supremacy, it is evident that its rarity and intrinsic value will continue to grow.
