The winged kneeling creature, weishou, as they have come toknown, are extremely rare. As a guardian-demon, its ferociousfacial expression face is possibly designed with intent to protectplaces and people. Compare examples of limestone carvingsof kneeling winged creatures dated to Northern Qi Dynasty,in the collection of Freer and Sackler Gallery (accession no.F1916.345, F1953.86 & F1953.87).
