(Qianlong Six-Character Sealmark and of the Period (1736-1795))
A RU-TYPE VASE

27.5 cm. (10 7/8 in.) high

Supported on a sturdy short splayed circular foot, the robustly-potted cubic-shaped body rising gently to a wide circular rim, the four corners on the shoulder issuing further four shorter and smaller spouts, superbly-fired to achieve an overall attractive and unctuous bluish-green glaze with a network of fine crackles, the base with a six-character zhuanshu Imperial reign mark in underglaze blue._x000D_
The present lot is exceedingly rare in its form and appears to have very limited related examples published. Whilst a profusion of new shapes for porcelain vases was already developed in the Yongzheng period, however the variations multiplied and are seemingly endless during the Qianlong period._x000D_
A tour-de-force of craftsmanship, it is an exceptional example of the technical zenith achieved by the potters working at the Imperial kilns in Jingdezhen during the Qianlong period, evident in the highly unusual five-spout form of the current lot produced during this period, achieved only by balancing the imposing weight of the piece. The piece is made even rarer by the application of the Imperial Ru glaze inspired from the Northern Song dynasty, exhibiting a bluish tinge and fine craquelure in imitation of the original prototypes, achieved only by stabilizing the kiln temperature and firing conditions. As with other related porcelain vases with this glaze, they are often minimally decorated to focus the viewers’ attention on the exquisite unctuous glaze and the wild series of naturalistic glaze cracks._x000D_
