(Qianlong Six-Character Sealmark and of the Period (1736-1795))
A MAGNIFICENT IMPERIAL BLUE AND WHITE 'FLOWER AND FRUITS’ EWER AND COVER

29 cm. (11 3/8 in.) high


Elegantly-potted with a pear-shaped body rising from a short, slightly splayed foot to a waisted neck and an everted rim, set on one side with a curved elongated spout decorated with classic scrolls, joined at the neck by a cloud-shaped strut decorated with ruyi clouds, opposite the arched strap handle adored by grooves and surmounted by a small loop on top and accented with three knobs at the base imitating metalwork studs, beautifully painted in early Ming-style cobalt blue with barbed panel on each side, one enclosing a branch of peaches and the other with a branch of loquat, all flanked by scrolling flowers above a band of leaf lappets and classic scroll encircling the foot, the neck featuring a broad lotus scroll beneath overlapping plantain leaves, the cover further decorated with floral scrolls and stylised lotus lappets ending in a protruding ring knop, the base with a six-character zhuanshu Imperial reign mark in underglaze blue._x000D_
Ewers such as the present lot are inspired by their bronze prototypes from the Ming dynasty; the Yongzheng period saw a range of fabulous porcelain being produced in revival of the styles of the previous reigns. Compare a similar ewer and cover in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated by by Geng Baochang, Ming Qing Ciqi Jianding, fig.178. See also another example previously in the collection of Dr. K.S.
