The pear-shaped swollen body supported on a broad foot, followed by a tall, cylindrical neck and prominent ‘garlic-bulb’ mouth. The body of the vase is brilliantly-enamelled with vivid tones of iron-red, yellow, and green, and painted in underglaze blue with a pair of upright five-clawed dragon and descending phoenix, depicted writhing in pursuit of flaming pearls, the pair is repeated on the reserve side, amidst stylised flowers on meandering stems, above a collar of foliate scroll at the foot, and below a double-line border. The neck of the vase is enamelled with various auspicious objects hanging between lotus floral blooms amidst meandering stems. Close to the mouth of the vase, a vivid collar of upside pomegranate surrounds the mouth of the vase, right below narrow bands of ruyi heads. The rim of the mouth bears the six-character Wanli reign mark._x000D_
This vase represents the quality of Imperial Wanli porcelain at its best and embodies the unique style of the porcelain production during that reign. It is very rare to find such a piece with clearly laid dynamic dragon and phoenix patterns with such brilliant tones.
