The monumental pagoda sturdily supported on a waisted rectangular pedestal with four bands of lotus scrolls and archaistic kui dragons worked in repoussé, the top bordered by a balustrade decorated in classical baluster form and ruyi-heads, surrounding a central towering parfumier of pierced square-section with incised archaistic and cloud scrolls, the top end further incised with a six-character kaishu Imperial mark on the front-facing side, all surmounted by two-tiered roof ending in a square knop, also incised with bands of stylised lotus scrolls and kui dragons, the lower edges over-hanging two bands of downturned vase-like bosses and the corners all issuing archaistic dragon finials, overall gilt in gold._x000D_
It is rare to find incense burners of this rectangular section and parcel-gilt are extremely rare, as most of the time they are shaped in cylindrical form and in other materials. Usually commissioned as an ensemble to furnish throne rooms, they were made for practical uses and also symbolises the virtues of the ruler. The highly perfumed atmosphere from the smoke issues from such incense burners would have augmented the presence of the emperor._x000D_
Incense burners of such imposing size are often made for large spaces, see a large pair pictured in situ in the Yangxindian (Hall of Mental Cultivation), illustrated in Qingdai Gongting Shenghuo, Hong Kong, 1985, pl.72. See also a pair of spinach jade and gilt-bronze pagoda-shaped incense burners in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated by Jessica Rawson, China: The Three Emperors, Royal Academy of Arts, London, 2005, cat.no.22.
