Wang Xisan is unquestionably the finest enameller since the zenith of the Beijing Palace Workshops under the Qianlong Emperor. Compare another related enamelled glass snuff bottle by the artist formerly in the Kaynes-Klitz Collection, sold at Sotheby’s Hong Kong, 30 October 1990, lot 58, and subsequently illustrated in Sotheby’s Hong Kong - Twenty Years, Hong Kong, 1993, p.283, no.478. The present lot is attributed to the style of the artist which dates to around 1964. When Wang Xisan was presented with an article titled ‘The Apricot Grove Studio: The Ye Family of Snuff Bottle Artist’ by Hugh M. Moss in 1985, published by the Journal of the International Chinese Snuff Bottle Society (JICSBS), Spring 1982, the artist identified a number of his enamel works covered in the article which are similar in style and quality to the current lot, where he confirmed that such styles are attributed to the dating of 1964.
