A CLOISONNÉ ENAMEL RECTANGULAR INCENSE BURNER, FANGDING

19 cm. (7 1/4 in.) high

Ben Janssens Oriental Art, London_x000D_

Both in form and decoration, this unusual cloisonné enamel incense burner consciously copies the ancient bronze ritual food vessel, fangding. Four-legged bronze vessels with a rectangular body are a typical form of the late Shang and early Western Zhou periods, first appearing in the 12th or 11th century BC. A comparable cloisonné enamel incense burner, larger in size but similar in form and decoration, dated to the Ming dynasty, is in the collection of the Museums für Kunsthandwerk, Frankfurt. Two further comparable examples are in the collection of the Palace Museum, Beijing; the larger one with very similar enamelling is dated to the early Qing dynasty while the other example is dated to the mid-Qing dynasty.
