The carving of cinnabar lacquer is a technique which has been used in China since the Song dynasty, which involves the technique of working into multiple thick coatings of red lacquer. It is highly-prized during the Ming and Qing dynasties, and is regarded a luxury product of that contemporary period as it is very time-consuming to produce and the dangerous process involved in the collection of the poisonous sap from the tree._x000D_
The present panels are a good example of the workmanship achieved by the lacquer carvers of the Qing dynasty and are particularly notable for the sheer size and double-sided carving showcasing different types of lacquer workmanship. For every single screen, the front side is decorated in cinnabar lacquer, with the upper panel carved to the scene of figures in leisurely pursuit, the lower panel depicting a group of various selection of antiquities within quatrelobed borders, all surrounded by metal mounted dragons, poetry inscription and key-fret scrolls at the corners. The reverse of each screen is decorated in black lacquer with painted and gilt-incised decoration of birds and flowers of the seasons at the top, the bottom also with further antiquities within a quatrelobed borders.
