Everything Survives, To Miss a Moment is Eternal.Shinji Ohmaki ‘s Poems and Aesthetics
Shinji Ohmaki was born in Gifu, Japan in 1971 and graduated from Department of Sculpture from the University of Tokyo. His creations used the momentary changes of light and shadow and rich image layers as elements, integrated art into the environment, and studied the conjunction of human and nature. It’s very poetic and philosophical. He has actively participated in the Asian Art Biennial, Aichi Triennale and Art Basel in recent years. His works are collected in Japan Gifu Museum, Taipei Fine Arts Museum, Union Bank of Switzerland, Korea Museum of Modern Art, and are recognized internationally.
Shinji Ohmaki developed the series of Echoes-Crystallization in 2004. He used old flower print fabric as the bottom surface mostly to depict the dense white floral ornament in this series as capturing the microscopic life in this magnificent world. It’s the typical work of this series. The artist broke through the plane and created a disc-shaped façade base with fiberglass. After covering the Washi, he used the correction fluid and toner to create a crystal and clear white flower to show natural life. The shape of the disc is like a bright moon. The surface reflects the brightness of light. When hung, it will cast a shadow on the wall like a moon. The artist said, “I advocate that it is reflected back to my heart by external light. Feel the quiet time and space. Just like the moon, find new energy by learning from the outside world.” He integrates this concept into his work. The flow of the moon shadow symbolizes the operation of natural time. The flowers are placed and kept in the time, and the eternal symbiosis of everything is realized in a quiet posture like meditation.
