A HARDSTONE-EMBELLISHED HARDWOOD HANGING SCREEN

80 cm. (31 1/2 in.) high

Opulent embellished hardwood screens such as the present lot utilises prized natural materials set onto carved wooden panels, were used within the imperial palaces as hanging panels or table screens. Such inlaid hardwood screens would probably have been overseen by the Imperial Workshops, Zaobanchu, or commissioned to be given as imperial tribute from workshops in Guangdong or Suzhou. The western influence found on the current lot is probably directly related to the extensive foreign trade which flourished in Guangdong since the 16th century.
