Vibrant Lighting: a Rich Life Experience
Revive by Lu Rongchen

“Lu Rongchen figured out how to use oil by its fluidity to create a sense of perspective and space that couldn't be find in abstract paintings. The oil also creates a sense of water and light, shows the rhythm of natural light and inner harmony, and brings his sublimate skill to another stage.”
Qiu Xuheng, art critic

Lu Rongchen was born in Pingtung in 1963. After graduating from the Fine Arts Department of Chinese Culture University, he moved to Paris, where he stayed for more than 20 years, and during this period, he established a master–student relationship with Zao Wou-Ki. Lu's early works could be classified under naturalism, but as abstractionism was reigning in the Parisian art circles after his graduation, his artistic style gradually shifted, and he started creating abstract, rhythmic, and deeply moving paintings. He held solo exhibitions in the famous Pergolèse and Lansberg galleries, and this led to his name becoming popularized throughout the city.

Revive, created in 2014, is among the artist's favorite works created since his return to Taiwan. Lu used indigo as the main color to depict a wave in a way similar to ink painting. The white mist above the water surface rises up, creating an upward pattern, while the pinkish-orange hue in the middle of the painting creates a flow between the warm and cool tones. In the lower left part of the picture, there is a white splash of light which seems like a flame in the sea. The surrounding contrast makes the splash the visual center of the picture, attracting viewers' gaze. The reason for Revive's vivid artistic language is rooted in the long and deep influence European culture has had on the artist, an influence that became the source of his exquisite artistic identity.
