A CELADON-GLAZED DOUBLE-GOURD VASE, HULUPING(Qianlong Six-Character Sealmark and of the Period (1736-1795))

33 cm. (13 in.) high


Finely-formed in a double-gourd shape symbolising fertility and good fortune, the bulbous body and narrow waist beneath the rounded upper section narrowing to a slender neck, the exterior covered with a delicate even celadon glaze, the interior glazed white and the flat biscuit foot ring enclosing the gently recessed base also glazed celadon with a six-character zhuanshu seal mark in underglaze blue.Extant Qianlong examples of the present vase can be found in important museum and private collections from around the world. A similar vase and cover in the Nanjing Museum, was exhibited in Qing Imperial Porcelain of the Kangxi, Yongzheng and Qianlong Reigns, Hong Kong, 1995, cat.no.69, and further illustrated in Treasures in the Royalty: The Official Kiln Porcelain of the Chinese Qing Dynasty, Shanghai, 2003, p.341. See also a similar vase in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, illustrated by S. G. Valenstein, The Hertzman Collection of Chinese Ceramics, New York, 1992, pl.98. Another example formerly in the collection of J. M.
