A PAIR OF EMBROIDERED SILK 'ELEPHANT' CHAIR COVERS(Circa 1870)

Each, 158 cm. (62 1/4 in.) high


Each cover of salmon-coloured silk embroidered with a caprisoned elephant, symbol of harmony, bearing a vase containing auspicious emblems, including the wish fulfilling ruyi, peacock feathers, symbol of royalty, cash symbols, rhino horn, and coral. Among the clouds surrounding the elephant are six of the Eight Buddhist Emblems embroidered in fine Peking-knot stitch. The top of the cover decorated with the Buddhist canopy and pair of fish, also in fine Peking knot. The lower part featuring an auspicious garden scene in shades of blue showing tree peony, rocks, chrysanthemum, lilies, and prunus, with a butterfly above.
