A BROWN SILK BROCADE 'DRAGON' ROBE(Kangxi Period (1661-1722))

130.5×131 cm. (51 3/8×51 5/8 in.)


Of brown silk brocade, woven with five-clawed dragons surrounded by colourful clouds, the chest, shoulders and back with large front facing dragons, each cradling the flaming pearl of wisdom. Below with a pair of confronting dragons chasing a central pearl above a lishui border of rolling waves and terrestrial mountain peaks. Further auspicious emblems in the waves include scrolls, pearls, rhinoceros horn and ruyi-shaped clouds.Bright yellow was worn by the emperor, empress and dowager empress, other members of the imperial clan wore varying shades of ‘yellow’. Brown, being a lesser shade of yellow, was worn by imperial noblemen and princes.
