Ma Changli's Landscape Inspiration

Ma Changli graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts with honour in 1953, and taught there after afterwards. In the following year, he joined the postgraduate programme of the college, to learn oil painting from Luo Gongliu, an overseas returnee. At the same time, he followed the critical realism master of the older generation like Wu Zuoren, Ai Zhongxin, and others, absorbing and merging the style of European Impressionism and the apperception of traditional Chinese ink painting. He develops his brand new style that balances the realistic expression, special depth, and dimensional composition, realising an expressional, elegant, free, and personal painting character.

In the 1990s, China started its Open and Reform modernisation. Chinese artists initiated their worldwide exhibition tour as well. Ma also held his exhibition in Singapore, Paris, Lyon and other cities. Rocks on the Beach was created in his 1995 Malaysian sketch journey. For the north-grown artist like Ma, beachside is not a common scene. Thus, painting about sea is extremely rare in his whole life creation. This painting pictures the rugged and grand rocks on the beach in a broad panorama style, within a spectacular view in contrast with the white sand and blue sea. The fine-grained texture on the rock is the creation of the temporal change in weathering and erosion, telling us the role time plays in the nature. A couple of young friends are rolling up the trousers, and joyfully heading towards the spindrift in waves. Another youngster climbed upon the rock, overlooking the vast expanse of the sea scene, with wind whistling around. The broad and tranquil sea level seems to make time frozen, while the sound of the wave and curve of the rock run into the eternity. All of these create an unforgettable ultimate world, plucking the strings of our hearts.
