Tender Yearning in The Light
Light Bulb Man by Lin Chien-Jung

As one of Taiwan's premier artists, Lin Chien-Jung combines lighting and sculpture to present his own unforgettable personal language. Born in 1970, he was already showing great promise while studying at the Graduate Institute of Plastic Arts in Tainan National University of the Arts. In 2003, he held his solo exhibition zZZ at the Taipei Fine Arts museum, in which he presented the Light Bulb Man for the first time. The form's inspiration originated from Lin's childhood experiences. Young Lin would often stay in the attic either for playtime or when he was sent there as punishment for being mischievous. The approaching night time would be quite a scary affair. Yet the small glowing bulb at his home always brought warmth and contentment to the impressionable youngster. Such memories sparked his fascination with combining the light bulb and its natural elements into the theme of his work later on.

His Light Bulb Man is simple but comes with emotions and thoughts. It blends in subtly with the daytime atmosphere and it lights up the room in the night, emitting warmth. It forms a sense of space that “integrates art into life”, which has touched countless viewers. His works have been collected by National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, National Museum of History, Australian White Rabbit Gallery and Beijing Today Art Museum. Say Hi 2, which we are presenting this time, is a classic piece in the Light Bulb Man series.

In Say Hi 2, the little person sits alone in a corner, with legs perched up in an excitable pose. His round head glows with warmth, illuminating those who wish to come forth to one another to talk in the dark and silent night. With one hand on the ground and the other pointing diagonally towards the sky, he extends positive greetings to the viewer, perhaps inviting us to see and embrace the constant changes that the unknowable universe brings. Lin gives the little man life through form and ingenuity. The moment we encounter it, our world is lit up instantly. The everlasting light is like a gentle whisper in our ears, melting the hidden loneliness and sense of alienation, soothing our soul.
