Shining Ashes, Echoing Universe
Shen Chang-Ming's Physical Beauty

Shen Chang-Ming was born in the 1950s, This Taiwan artist has been immersing himself in the art world for over fifty years. He did not join any painting association, but never stopped creation on his own. Shen graduated from the Kaohsiung Municipal Cianjin Junior High School, as one of the first graduates from the art class, also a student of Liu Qixiang. He was admitted in 1973 into Tung Fang Design Institute, where he won the first place in the campus oil painting competition two years into his studies. In 1984, he held a solo exhibition in the National Taiwan Arts Education Center, and the positive response came in widely. As a committed Buddhist, he couldn't stop painting and creating, and in the exploration he derived the philosophy of mutual confirmation between Buddhism and science. His most celebrated series Wandering of Quantum from quantum mechanics and Buddhist classics, and imitated quantum particles by sprinkling fine-grained sand on the canvas. Wandering of Quantum III on show is one of the outstanding pieces.

The first impression of the painting, Wandering of Quantum III, is the morning sun hanging in the air, splendid and charming. While the words Form is not different from emptiness; Emptiness is not different from form; Form is indeed emptiness; Emptiness is indeed form; are engraved the sands in a subtle style. The dialectic of Form and Emptiness presented in the painting is intriguing and worth our thinking. By arranging the color and light, artist enlightens us the specialities of oriental seal carving in the layers of the magnificent painting. He uses the paints to copy Buddhist scripts on the painting, during which he brings us into the philosophy of Causality and Virtuality. The sands he used not only form an engraving effect, but also blend with the colorful paints. In the process of layering, spreading, and repeating, artist expresses his understanding of the micro-vibration of quantum science and constructs the numerous variations and possibilities in physical sense. This wonderland created by the artist also echoes the script, Form is indeed emptiness; Emptiness is indeed form in a metaphysical style.
