Humorous and Vivid
The Artistic Magic of Hung Yi

The artist Hung Yi from Taichung was born in 1970. He has been showing his passion for life with sculptures for over 20 years. Since 2004, he has used animals as the theme of his creation, combined with folklore, mythology, and personal imagination. He uses a unique forging method of steel plate paint, creating both classical and contemporary works, which have received widely recognition. His works are collected by many art museums, such as the San Francisco Asian Art Museum, The National Art Museum of China, and the Annmarie Sculpture Garden. In 2013, he was invited to hold a solo exhibition at the Hakone Sculpture Museum in Japan and another solo exhibition at the San Francisco City Hill in 2015. As a representative of Taiwanese artists, he participated in the 2019 Conversations: Contemporary Asian Art organized by the Hermitage Museum with Yoshitomo Nara and Zhang Xiaogang. He continues to practice the humanistic care of artistic living, bringing the oriental culture onto an international stage.

Good Fortune made in 2016 humorously combines a round pig and the persimmon shape, with a full and round persimmon as the body, and the leaf flaps protruding the pig's arched head. The small antennae are formed by the upturned nose and ears. Hung presents the imagery of Good Fortune in a cheerful and humorous way. Besides the auspicious patterns such as “flowers blooming for wealth” and “fortune and treasure”, the surface of the work is also covered with childlike elements of tropical fruits. The colorful image integrates the Fruit Kingdom reputation of Taiwan and the local Hakka floral decorations culture, creating a joyful and pleasant sonata.

In the collision of traditional values and contemporary media, Hung's creations merge the Eastern folk custom images, innocent imaginations, and life elements. He brings us an opportunity to taste the happiness and embrace the beautiful artistic magic.
