Pleasant Sheep, Flying Spirit
The Vitality and Happiness in the Sculptures of Hung Yi

Born in 1970, Hung Yi has gained great resonance in the international art scene in recent years. He has been using the “12 Zodiac” as the theme for twenty years of sculpture creation, transforming traditional totems into personalized and contemporary painted sculptures. He passes the happiness of art to every viewer, with works extremely popular in the public domain. His works have been exhibited as landmarks in the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, the Embassy Residence of the Double Oaks in Washington, DC, and the National Art Museum of China. They have been collected by many institutions as well. In 2013, the Hakone Sculpture Museum in Japan invited him to hold a major exhibition. In 2015, he was invited by the mayor of San Francisco to hold a solo exhibition at the City Hall. In recent years, his solo exhibitions have been successively held at the Cornell Museum of Art, the State Hermitage Museum of Virginia, the Spanish City of Arts and Sciences, and many other places, shining all over the world.

Hung combines ancient and modern artistic elements in his creation, with elements adopted from both China and the West. He reproduces those auspicious symbols and animal images with colorful, humorous, and contemporary paint patterns, showing the imagination and integration of cultures. Pleasant Sheep presented this time is completed in 2014, which is based on the sheep that represents joyfulness. The circling horns, the stacked legs of the sheep, and the full and round body constitute the dynamic shape of the subject. On the back of the sheep, the artist wrote the name of the work, conveying good wishes for life. The work is based on floral fabrics, papercuts, and other folk cultural activities, spreading around in a narrative collage. In the collision of traditional and contemporary, the old lotus pattern and wave pattern and the wave dots and chess patterns full of contemporary characteristics enrich the connotation of the sculpture. Among the patterns, viewers can find bees and butterflies flying around and flowers and trees growing vigorously. Hung presents this work in pop art and cartoon flat style, with a happy visual experience and contemporary vitality of combining Chinese and Western art permeating this colorful and childlike combination.
