Shen Chang-Ming's Beauty of Quantum

“In memory of my deceased son, I copied the Heart Sutra on canvas over and over again, forming a special texture after layer and layer. It made me realize the concept of yin versus yang, vacantness versus full. This discovery has led me to a new way of creating. The process of creation is also a kind of self-observation. When everyone is just energy from a common magnetic field and will return to its origin after leaving this physical body, there's no need to live an obsessed life.”

Shen Chang-Ming was born in 1956, this Taiwan artist has been immersing himself in the art world for over fifty years. After the loss of his son in 2006, he became more committed to Buddhism and realized that Buddhism and science can verify each other during his constantly practicing and painting the Heart Sutra. His most celebrated series Wandering of Quantum started in 2013, from quantum mechanics and Buddhist classics, and imitated quantum particles by sprinkling fine-grained sand on the canvas.

Like a Dream on show is one of the outstanding pieces. Against the earth tone background, a flash of luminescent blue rushes by, bringing a powerful sensory impact. On the surface of the painting, the delicate grains of sand are like pieces of dust, symbolizing the vastness of the universe. “Quantum” is represented here as sand grains, and the visual effects are superimposed like a montage, seemingly regular, but in fact indicating the law of chance and necessity, testifying to the truth of “impermanence” in Buddhism.

Shen Chang-Ming uses the colors that possess the sense of vastness to manifest the goodness and beauty of this world, creating a pure space for the viewers to meditate and rest.
