ZITAN FOLDING BASIN STAND WITH SIX LEGS

47×12×66 cm (18 1/2×4 3/4×25 1/2 in)

The stand is composed of squared members with notched or slightly grooved corners. The main frame is built in stile construction and set with four hinged posts with paired cross-braces, that form a six-legged stand while allowing the four hinged 'legs' to fold flat. The upper cross-braces are secured by curvilinear spandrels and each post terminates in a waisted lotus finial with both upturned and pendent petals above a seeded belt.
The height of the present example is more appropriate for supporting hand-warmers or braziers that were placed beside seat furniture. As the upper cross- braces had to bear the weight of a brass flat-rimmed circular basin that was filled with water or coals, additional support was given by their slender curved braces. It is therefore interesting to note that both aesthetic interest and structural value are provided by seemingly minor decorative elements in an otherwise plain form.
The stand may be compared to a huanghuali example without the curvilinear spandrels in the Shanghai Museum (Chuang 1998, no. 56.) and one in the Minneapolis Institute of Arts (Jacobsen and Grindley 1999, no. 58).
