Early Qing Period
PAIR OF HUANGHUALI ROSE CHAIRS

60×47×89 cm (23 5/8×18 1/2×35 in)×2

Each chair has a straight back flanked by straight armrails, supported by a back apron of cusped curvilinear profile carved with squared scrolls as accents. The apron continues down to a low rail on vertical struts just above the seat frame. The seat apron repeats the formula of the back apron, with a slightly more articulated profile, and molded beading running down to the straight foot-stretchers. Humpbacked aprons incorporating open spandrels at the corners below all four legs support the foot-stretchers.
The pair may be compared with a set of six low- back chairs in the Lu Ming Shi collection (Bruce 2000, no. 8).
