Moulting Golden Cicada, Spreading Its Wings and Soars
Ceet Fouad's World of Chicks

Born in Algeria in 1971, Ceet Fouad moved to Toulouse, France at the age of seven. He began making graffiti on the streets of France since the late 1980s. In 2003, he moved to China and started a series of works with the theme of “chicks”. To him, the chick is a messenger that brings joy to people. The chicks in his work have rounded bodies, wide eyes, and brilliant colours, characteristics making his creation highly recognization. The series has been exhibited in Hong Kong, New York, and Paris in recent years. Ceet Fouad has also been invited to collaborate with international brands such as Prada and Loewe. His works are highly sought after by collectors. For this autumn auction, we present his most representative easel painting Space Chicanos (Lot 28), as well as the exclusive suitcase and sculpture Chicanos Embryo (Lot 29) created in collaboration with French artist Alexandre Nicolas, revealing the charms of the chicks that are sweeping over the art world!

Charging Info the Clouds, A Picture Representing the New Generation

Entering the era where Facebook is now Meta, nations are racing to establish the solutions to enter an alternative world and seek new living space. Ceet Fouad's Space Chicanos highlights this specific topic and enlivens the matter through creativity. Against the huge red canvas, chicks gather into groups, embracing one another, ready to embark on outer space. Some chicks hug each other from the front, some from the back, while unitedly charging “upward”! From afar, the group of chicks heading toward outer space occupies the centre of the red canvas, leaving blank white spaces on the sides like a close-up shot in movies and forming a picture of the new generation. Employing the theme of “presentness”, Ceet Fouad keenly captures topics in important current events of the modern human race, such as living space and scarcity of earth resources, expressing serious themes through a set of humorous and lively lexis.

Special Presentation of an Exclusive Collaboration on Sculpture

We are excited to present Chicanos Embryo, a collaboration between Ceet Fouad and his good friend Alexandre Nicolas. Nicolas was born in the same year as Ceet Fouad. He is an outstanding new-generation sculptor in France. His creations apply the theme of “crystal”, combining his subject matter with transparent medium to reinforce the texture and natural form of crystals, further introducing new artistic vocabularies to the new-generation art lexis. In Chicanos Embryo, the two artists put a round, golden, pineapple-shaped chick in a transparent egg-shaped medium, symbolizing the metaphor of a moulting golden cicada which has the meaning of metamorphosis. The crystal-like shell of the sculpture shields the chick, making it seem within reach, but impossible to touch, exuding timeless characteristics. The black suitcase that holds the sculpture is covered in a group of animated chicks, jumping and chasing around, evoking the viewers' memories and anticipation of travelling, simultaneously representing the movement and stillness of life. The piece is full of implications and messages.
