The Summer Joy of Freedom
Human Touch of Chris Huen

The young Hong Kong artist Chris Huen explains his paintings in John Berger's words, calling them re-creations of one's own seeing experience. Through careful observation and feeling of daily life, he records the tranquil moments with his intuition. With his innocent eyes, he narrates the moving scenes of life. His paintings have been collected by The Art Gallery of New South Wales, the Kadist Art Foundation, and many other renowned collectors from home and abroad. In 2022, Huen's oil painting Shek O sold at auction for HK$1.89 million, making him one of the few “million-dollar artists” in Hong Kong and reaffirming his status in the contemporary Chinese art scene.

Huen graduated from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2013 with a degree in Fine Arts, and his talent was discovered by Gallery Exit, a Hong Kong-based gallery dedicated to discovering young artists, held his first solo exhibition for him the year after his graduation. Since 2015, he has created a series of works based on real-life activities, emphasizing a real moment in life, of which A Dinner presented in this auction is one of the highlights.

A Comfy Long Summer

The artist uses his classic relaxed brushwork to delineate a bay of water, in which fine and soft algae and greenery intertwine to form a dense circle of life. The frog is ready to find its way out of the water, looking for today's dinner, with an energetic look that speaks to the freedom and freshness of a long summer day. As the artist says, he has transferred the most common scenes of life onto the canvas, the pieces are like a summer breeze that soaks the viewer's heart and delivers infinite joy.
