The Splendor of Life
Damien Hirst's Truth, from The Aspects (H6-5)
Hirst is a leading figure of the Young British Artists. He uses animal specimens, pills, and diamond skulls to explore the eternal questions of life and death. His works are in the collections of the Tate Modern and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
In Hirst's work, butterflies are one of the most important characters. Hirst has been merging butterflies into his work since the late 1980s, and in 2001 he began to develop the Kaleidoscope series. In our auction, we present Truth, from The Aspects, a limited edition of paintings that continue his Kaleidoscope series.
In Truth, from The Aspects (H6-5), hundreds of butterflies radiate outward from the centre in concentric circles, extending the space to infinity. Through the different shades of blue and purple and the mottled wings, a kaleidoscopic visual illusion is created, revealing the inspiration for life. The butterflies flying in the painting seem to want to break out of the picture, showing the most moving brilliance and power dynamics of life.
