A Moment of Peace in the World
Greenwald's Starry Night Drift

"I am seduced by nowhereness while driving on country roads at night. The vague location defined by where my headlights reach is all I know of my place and, as usual, there isn't a real indication of what time is."
——Eliot Greenwald

Eliot Greenwald was born in Portland, Maine in 1983. He grew up in a creative family; such atmosphere incubated his talent and curiosity, leading him to becoming a self-taught artist. Since 2012, he actively engaged in the art world, creating dreamy pictures with minimalistic compositions, and drawing inspiration from daily life. His works have appeared on publications such as ARTnews and Juxtapoz, and exhibited in New York, Los Angeles, London, Seoul, Hong Kong, and other places. Among his works, the Night Car series that began in 2019 was highly sought after. In the autumn auction, Night Car (Vague Distinction 12), made in 2021, is a classical diptych on yupo.

The artist describes Night Car as "simultaneous familiarity and mystery," the inspiration for which comes from his experience of driving on an unfamiliar road at night. In the middle of a narrow road, under a dark, mystical sky, a car that is reminiscent of a wood-block toy is slowly driving into the valley, implying his reflections on human existence–every person looks to the future, yet that is where the unknown awaits. Distinctive from the other works in the series, the two compositionally identical pictures enhance the tension of the work like a musical double-stop, taking the viewer into a quiet world of doubled assurance. The cars project outwards light beams that illuminate wherever they reach, and the warmth of which are rendered using crayons. Vibrant colours of orange, green, lilac, and blue collide with each other, appearing and disappearing under the vehicles' headlights. The mystery and vastness of the universe as an unknown territory are created through the crescent moon that overhangs and the towering cedars. Leading the viewer into a psychedelic and surreal drift among the stars, the work encourages them to break away from the bound of time and to feel each moment in life.
