Colourful Poetry, a Dream Returning to Shangri-La
Chen Yingjie's New Utopian Chronicles

Chen Yingjie, with tons of thousands of followers on the social platform Instagram, was born in Guangdong in 1991. From a young age, he learned traditional Chinese ink painting from his father. Later, he studied at the Raffles Design Institute in Singapore, where he expanded his horizons by exploring street art and Western painting. Upon returning to China, he became a full-time artist, gaining popularity among young art collectors for his unique fusion of ink and graffiti. "Ink" serves as his therapeutic way of life, allowing him to settle his mind. Meanwhile, "graffiti" stems from the combination of his aesthetic sense and lifestyle, with vibrant colours adorning his works, creating street art scenery. Unexpectedly combining these two expressive forms, he renders a realm that is both dazzling and ethereal.

Chen Yingjie's works have been exhibited in major institutions in China and around the world. Additionally, he is a darling in the fashion industry, having collaborated with brands such as Cartier, Louis Vuitton, and Vans. He was also selected by the American magazine Complex as one of the "25 Chinese Contemporary Artists You Must Know." This auction showcases his classic masterpiece Gravity XXIX, a portrayal reminiscent of the legendary Shangri-La, brought to life through his abstract interpretation.

The Anthem of Life in Colours

Chen Yingjie employs the traditional Chinese landscape painting technique for image creation, where the flowing and infinite nature of vibrant graffiti ink blends, allowing a limited canvas to present a magnificent epic. Like a volcano erupting, it sings the anthem of life in brilliance.

The Natural Laws of Mystery

Surveying the scene, the fluid ink and spray paint collide inadvertently, unleashing a dramatic effect portraying the conflict between humanity and nature. Whether it is the surreal combination of natural landscapes or the growth of colour blocks resembling biological cells in corners, along with the use of shimmering materials, it seems to shape a fragile yet balanced ecosystem. The interplay of the five elements – metal, wood, water, fire, and earth, reveals the unchanging laws of the cycle of all things. The mysteries and wonders of nature are fully captured in this realm.
