Vestiges of the Ancients
– A Legacy of Antiquities from Overseas Collections
"When it comes to vessels and names, they should not be entrusted to others; they are under the authority of the ruler. Names derive their credibility from their significance, and credibility is used to safeguard the vessels, while the vessels are used to preserve the rituals."
The Records of the Left, second year of Chenggong reign (589 BC)
"Ten years drifting across the seas,
From north to south and east to west,
Gathering treasures from overseas.
Returning to one's hometown,
With profound virtue nurturing all things,
Rare and precious bronze."
"Vestiges of the Ancients" refers to archaic bronze ritual vessels that were essential for ancestral worship in temples. They are categorised into ancestral ritual vessels, including wine vessels and ceremonial vessels (which are further divided into stationary vessels used for offerings in temples and traveling vessels used by soldiers), and musical instruments for ceremonial worship. These vessels represent a vital connection to past ancestral worship practices.
In "Li Lun" (On Rites), Xunzi states that order is the essence of ritual and harmony is the essence of music. Our cultural ancestors relied on these principles, derived from the order and harmony of Heaven and Earth, to establish a societal model centred around rites and music. Consequently, the ritual vessels and ceremonial implements employed in these practices must be specifically crafted objects to reflect these fundamental values.
The ancient bronze ritual vessels, once known as "jijin" (auspicious metal), were initially dazzling creations. Over millennia, they developed a rich green patina, becoming archaic bronzes that convey a calm and solemn presence, still reflecting royal majesty. Their craftsmanship reveals insights into their origins: the Shang period focused on quality, while the Zhou period emphasized culture. This evolution signifies the enduring roots of ancient civilisation that have thrived and persisted through time.
"Vestiges of the Ancients – A Legacy of Antiquities from Overseas Collections" highlights the art of archaic bronzes, rooted in Chinese culture and exceptional craftsmanship, bringing together "jijin" scattered overseas for over a century. Their elegance, seen in intricate patterns, warm lustre, and simple colours, evokes profound emotions despite their initially cold appearance. For collectors, these vessels provide silent companionship and enduring connection, blending aesthetic appreciation with a sense of rebirth and warmth that transcends time.
