Archaic Jade and Bronzes from a Distinguished Hong Kong Collection

748
An extremely rAre white Jade Kneeling Figure(Han Dynasty (202BC-AD220))

7.5 cm. high (3 in.)

Very few examples of kneeling figures attributable to the Han dynasty appear to have been published. Han dynasty pottery representations of kneeling figures are well known but their jade counterparts appear to be much rarer. A pair of kneeling figures of musicians in the Hebei Provincial Center for Cultural Heritage Preservation are illustrated in Zhongguo Chutu Yuqu Quanji, vol. 1, Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, 2005, no. 186. The figures share some similarities including the carving of their hands and robes but the static posture of the Hebei figures does not have the same elegant sense of movement seen in the present example.
