A Huanghuali Square Cabinet

114.6×86.4×37.5 cm. 45 1/8×34×14 3/4 in.

The seat frame of each armchair is finished with rounded outer edges. The front member is bowed out to resemble a fan. The front member is bowed out to resemble a fan. The simple straight apron has a beaded edge to the rounded corners and is accented with a small pair of detached confronting dragons. Rounded legs continue up to the front-and back-posts to support the arms, and the continuous crestrail is secured by a central splat. The matted backsplat is divided in three registers, with a barbed ruyi-head motif carved above a rectangular panel of lozenge-woven matting, and a curvilinear short apron just before the seat. The foot-stretchers are set with separate metal liners.
Many of the woven or matted insets in the backsplats of these chairs have been replaced with blind panels at a later date, the back panels are buffed down and trimming strips are added to the back to mask the original weave-matting drill-holes.
The simplicity of the apron and the form of the backsplat suggest an early date for the present pair, and the shape of the seat is particularly unusual.
