The back and side rails of the couch are of equal height and constructed with squared members. Together they form a frieze of vertical posts below a horizontal rail leaving a thin open band interspersed with double-ring struts. The seat frame is slightly grooved and curves sharply into the low waist. Below, robust and slightly curved legs terminate in hoof feet. There is continuous beading along the inner edge of the legs and straight apron.
An interesting refinement is visible at the corners where the back and side rails meet: an additional thicker full-height post "frames" the frieze of shorter posts at either corner while allowing the side rails to tenon directly into the vertical frame-members of the back. This feature preserves the illusion of structural lightness and enforces the visual continuity of the frieze without compromising the structural strength of the joins between the back and sides.
Note the lack of an exaggerated curve of the legs and the more prominent evidence of a high hoof foot compared to no. 47. This assists in dating the present couch stylistically almost twenty-five to fifty years earlier than no. 47. This chuang is an excellent example of the confident and elegant restraint evident in the early Kangxi style.
