Qianlong Iron-Red Four-Character Sealmarks and of the Period (1736-1795)
A Rare White-EnamelLED Turquoise-Glazed Double Vase

18.5 cm. (7 1/4 in.) high

An identical turquoise-glazed double vase was sold at Sotheby’s Hong Kong, 4th April 2012, lot 3188. The use of raised white enamel against a turquoise ground appears to be an innovation of the Qianlong reign that continued into the Jiaqing and Daoguang periods. Although extant Qianlong examples are rare, a number of vessels employing this technique have been published and sold at auction, all bearing similar iron-red marks. Compare the decoration with that on a bowl in the Nanjing Museum, illustrated in The Official Kiln Porcelain of the Chinese Qing Dynasty, Shanghai, 2003, p. 265. Another similar unmarked bowl, dated to the Qianlong period, with raised white enamel lotus scroll was sold at Christie’s Hong Kong, 4th October 2016, lot 142. A Qianlong-marked turquoise-glazed wall vase decorated in white enamel with dragons, floral scroll and similar decorative borders to the present double-vase, was sold at Sotheby’s Paris, 15 December 2015, lot 175.
