A Pair of Openwork CloisonnÉ Enamel Lanterns

A number of cloisonné enamel lanterns of similar construction have been sold at auction but the present pair is particularly unusual and complex in its use of convex circular openwork lattice panels. Cloisonné enamel lanterns are more common in rectangular form with apertures for painted glass or silk panels. A pair of similarly elaborate lanterns was sold at Christie’s New York, 22nd March 2013, lot 1291 and single lantern was sold at Christie’s New York, Rivers of Color: Cloisonné Enamels from Private American Collections, 18th September 2014, lot 631. Compare, also, two further pairs sold at Christie’s New York, 24th March 2011, lot 1617, and 20th September 2013, lot 1633 and a pair of lanterns sold at Sotheby’s Hong Kong, 8th October 2009, lot 1738.
