A Superbly Carved Imperial Ivory Figural Brushpot

This exceptional ivory brushpot belongs to a small group of similar exceptionally well-carved ivory brushpots carved with continuous scenes of figures in landscapes, including several examples in the Palace Museum in Beijing. Compare two examples from the Palace Museum Collection illustrated in Zhongguo meishu quanji, Gongyi meishu bian 11 zhu, mu, ya, jiao, qi, Beijing, 1987, nos. 95 and 96; and a third illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, Bamboo, Wood, Ivory and Rhinoceros Horn Carvings, no. 44, Hong Kong, 2002, pp. 163-4, no. 142. Compare, also, an example from the Robert H. Blumenfield Collection, sold at Christie’s New York, For the Enjoyment of Scholars: Selections from the Robert H. Blumenfield Collection, 25 March 2010, lot 854 and another finely carved Imperial ivory brush pot sold at Christie’s Hong Kong, Exceptional Chinese Works of Art from an Important European Collection, 30th November 2011, lot 2902.
