A PAIR OF HUANGHUALI SQUARE STOOLS(Late Ming Period)

69.2×69.2×50.2 cm (27 1/4×27 1/4×19 3/4 in)

This unusually large pair of square stools exhibits the standard characteristics of seventeenth-century construction. A one-piece,waisted apron is mitered and half-lapped into the top of the legs;the humpback stretcher is square-tenoned into the inside edge of the legs and slightly recessed so as not to disturb the visual flow of a raised bead running down the leg. The high hoof foot is another indication of a late Ming date.
