A HUANGHUALI CABINET WITH HANDLE(Late Ming/Early Qing Period)

74.9×39.3×91.4 cm (29 1/2×15 1/2×36 in)

This huanghuali cabinet……is distinguished by a greater simplicity of design and detail. Rather than employing the more standard framed,floating-panel construction for the door,plain,unframed,matched-grain panels with a narrow, mitered frame attached to the inside surface are used,The mounts are equally minimal:doors are inlaid with a circular escutcheon and squared hinges. Inlaid metalwork on the corners of the base and a handle with round bosses, washers, and split pins constitute the sole decoration. On each side an upright post, flanked by undecorated spandrels, joins a humpback rail on the top. Inside the cabinet are two fixed shelves. Three small drawers are affixed to the underside of the lower shelf and another three drawers are in the base.
